Look for STORMY SEAS windswept trees, rugged cliffs, a sense of TIMELESSNESS and crystal clear LIGHT that inspires but tests the most skillful of painters. This is the PEMROKESHIRE a land of great diversity, that has attracted artists for centuries.
In the l7th century FRANCIS PLACE was making a wash drawing of TEN. Richard Wilson followed drawing PEMBROKE CASTLE, while TURNER, excited by the atmosphere of the place was inspired to produce many dramatic watercolours . Moses Griffiths and CHARLES NORRIS drew in Tenby, JOHN WARWICK SMITH (1749-1831) painted the two old LIGHTHOUSES on St Annes Head a painting that has been bought for the National Library of Wales.
PAUL SANDBY'S watercolour PEMBROKE CASTLE AT SUNSET sold in recent years for over £7000 and RICHAXD COIT HOARE'S glorious drawings of favourite places are well known illustrations in RICHARD FENTON'S book that was produced in the latter half of the l8th century.
Distinguished brother and sister AUGUSTUS" and GWEN JOHN grew up in Pembrokeshire and in the early years of the second world war GRAHAM SUTHERLAND was writing of " the EXULTANT STRANGENESS' of this place". His love affair with the county in which he said he" began to learn painting" led him to open his own gallery at PICTON CASTLE.
This far corner of West Wales has also been the mecca of JOHN PIPER, the photographer RAYMOND MOORE, painter RAY HOWARD JONES and the refugee from Nazi tyranny Frederick KOlVEKAMP.
The list could go on and on. In 1965 an article in the DAILY TELEGRAPH predicted that the area was destined to become another .ST IVES.
That prediction really began to come true in 1989 when a PEMBROKESHIRE SCHOOL began to emerge as PETER DANIELS brought the work of other artists of similar stature working in the county into his own gallery, convinced that this School could be as important as the CORNISH SCHOOL of earlier years.
Today there are at least 100 artists working in Pembrokeshire, some are "weekend painters" enjoying a fulfilling hobby but there are also many FAMOUS NAMES renowned nationally and internationally -ROYAL ACADEMICIANS, Past Presidents of the ROYAL WATERCOLOUR SOCIETY and those whose work has been COMMISSIONED by members of the ROYAL FAMILY.
